Manchester City Star Open to a move away from city

Midfield dynamo Kalvin Phillips is gearing up to weigh his options for a departure from Manchester City this January, according to an insider who spoke to ESPN. Despite facing difficulties breaking into Pep Guardiola's starting lineup in his first season at the Etihad, the fighter in Phillips urged him to stay and vie for a spot over the summer.

However, the 27-year-old's faith is dwindling as he finds it increasingly unlikely to secure a regular spot on City's roster, especially after being bypassed for Premier League clashes with Wolves and Arsenal during Rodri's suspension.

Having joined in a staggering £43 million ($52.5m) deal from Leeds United back in 2022, Phillips was meant to rival Rodri for the position. But even with the Spanish international benched due to suspension, Phillips found himself warming the sidelines during games at Molineux and Emirates.

With only one start this season – a 1-0 loss against Newcastle in the Carabao Cup – and two Premier League starts under his belt since joining City, Phillips recognizes that time is not on his side. An inside source revealed to ESPN that Phillip's chance at more playing time seems slim as Rodri returns and Carabao Cup hopes are dashed.

Determined to retain his membership in England's squad for Euro 2024 held in Germany next summer, Phillips knows that consistent playtime is crucial. England's manager Garath Southgate hinted that regular appearances would benefit his chances of selection during October's international break against Australia and Italy.

Rumors abound that Bayern Munich may be keeping an eye on Phillips after failing to acquire Fulham midfielder João Palhinha on transfer deadline day. As for Guardiola, the Manchester City coach is likely to let Phillips chart his own course if he expresses a desire to leave come January. A loan move could be on the cards as discussions about his lasting future continue through summer.
